How much is too much?
The general consensus seems to be that 2 workers per mineral formation is the most efficient number. Workers
refers to drones, probes and SCVs. A mineral formation refers to the outcroppings that make up a large mineral deposit. Making more workers does not
significantly increase your mineral gathering.
If a vespene geyser is close to your point of delivery ( Nexus, Hatchery, Command Center) then 3 workers is the most
efficient number. A worker should just be coming out of the geyser as one arrives to go in. The farther the geyser is from a point of delivery the more
workers are required.
What really wins the war?
Many real time strategy players believe that the biggest and baddest weapons of destruction are what inevitably win the
war. Against an opponent of average capability or better this will almost always not be the truth.
Weapons of mass destruction take a long time to build and use huge amounts of resources to create. Weigh your
options before streaking towards the big guns. Some things to consider include;
Which will be more useful, 20 inexpensive units or 1 expensive one? In most cases the former will be the best
choice. Not only do large numbers of units have a psychological effect on your opponent, but they are generally harder to destroy. They can be split to attack
or defend multiple points. Always weigh your options before spending your hard earned resources.
Expansion means victory.
The extra resources you receive from expanding into new resource areas can mean victory. The best time to expand
is tough to determine. Expanding during one of your attack phases can give you extra time to get setup and defended. It rarely wise to expand when your
primary base is not yet defended.
The more expansion slots you can dominate the more likely you are to win. Without resources your enemy cannot
build an army and over time you will simply outproduce him or her.
Upgrades VS more units.
In the early stages of a game it is more important to have a large number of units that to have a small number of
upgraded ones. Upgrades don't mean much if you don't have any units alive to use them on. Remember that an upgrade when you have 20 units produced affects 20
immediately. An upgrade when you have have none affects none.
Offense
Know thine enemy.
Reconnaisance and knowledge of your enemy's forces is always important. Armed with this knowledge you can generate the right tools for the impending
attack.
Attack with combined arms.
Rushing into the enemy base with one type of unit is most often disastrous. Try to make solid attacks using both air and land units. Exploit the
enemy weaknesses and play to your own units' strenghts.
Defense
Know thine enemy.
Reconnaisance and knowledge of your enemy's forces is always important. Armed with this knowledge you can generate the right tools against the impending
attack.
